Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
