Finest TV Choices: Seven Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring critique examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress presents an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity demoted to presenting a workout series on television. Edged out by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying process called the Substance. This generates a new version of herself named Sue, resulting in a progressively vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a hiatus from reporting on global conflict to embark on a luxury cruise accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her spouse, and other extremely wealthy passengers. But after an unknown lady goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this clever ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has made the youth on edge. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, though Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks sported by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – among them is his spouse. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema
